THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS LIKE ...
The kingdom of God is like many different things. The parables of Jesus
in Matthew 13:31-52 tell us some things about this kingdom we pray will
come. The kingdom is like small, ordinary, everyday things that when put to use for God’s purposes have miraculous, surprising, and extravagant results: the mustard seed that grew into a tree; the yeast that provided enough bread for 150 people.
The kingdom is like valuable treasure or precious pearls – whatever we would give up everything else in order to have. It’s difficult to think of anything that might be that important or valuable to us. But Jesus promises that the kingdom is like that for us.
The kingdom is like a fish net that catches fish of EVERY kind. The kingdom of God welcomes everyone. Not one is left out.
Sunday morning we wrote our own parables about what the kingdom of God is like. These are the parables written with sticky notes on the windows:
The kingdom of God is like gathering to read or discuss a book or watch a movie together that gives surprising and miraculous new insights about God’s will for our lives.
The kingdom of God is like a group gathering to do crafts, like sewing or quilting – making things that give others incredible hope and new life.
The kingdom of God is like gathering together to attend sporting events, play golf, swim, hike, go boating, rollerblading, bike riding or spelunking – or even play video games that in having fun together we build strong relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ who are able to bring God’s kingdom to our world.
The kingdom of God is like sharing tools and yard equipment, helping neighbors that are unable to take care of their homes and yards by themselves.
The kingdom of God is like a care group with friends that encourage each other to live faithfully in difficult times in order to offer hope to others who feel alone.
The kingdom of God is like a study group who learn how to pray and discern God’s will who change the course of history.
The kingdom of God is us – playing, working and learning in ordinary ways with ordinary things – bringing the precious treasure of God’s kingdom to everyone.
