Our Core Commitments & Beliefs
Christ the King Lutheran Church, as a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is rooted in an ancient and timely story: the story of a powerful, loving and patient God who has boundless love for all people and has demonstrated this love in a historical figure, Jesus Christ, through Him restoring our relationship with God, a relationship broken by our sin (that which separates us from God).We share a number of beliefs with Christians of other traditions. With the historic and apostolic church, we confess:
* the Triune God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
* the historical person, Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior, who was crucified and who rose bodily from the dead;
* the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe;
* that Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate;
* that the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the written Word of God, inspired by God's Spirit, announcing God's revelation centering in Jesus Christ, the living Word;
* the statements of Christian faith found in the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed.
As Lutherans, we are in the Reformed tradition of Christian faith, finding our roots in the Reformation, that historical period of reform which began with the work of Martin Luther (1483-1546), who sought to bring the Church back to its original, foundational beliefs of Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
As Lutherans, we accept the unaltered Augsburg Confession as a true witness to the Gospel and accept the Book of Concord (the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles and the Treatise, the Large and Small Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord) as further valid interpretations of Christian faith.
We readily confess that:
* we are saved by the grace (a gift of unmerited favor) of God alone, not by anything we can do;
* our restored relationship with God is appropriated through faith (trust) in God, who in Christ promises us forgiveness, life and salvation;
* that the Bible is normative for our beliefs, faith and way of life.
As a local congregation, we believe we are called to be a visible, acting representation of the presence of Christ here in the greater Greenville area, and to demonstrate the "whosoever" call of the Gospel by welcoming all who come into a life of faith in Christ and service to others.
Our Mission
...GATHER TO WORSHIP
DEPART TO SERVE...
"ALL" — The Biggest Word in Scripture
Christ
the King, a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America - South Carolina Synod, is a Christian
community where ALL are truly welcome. Embracing our past faith traditions,
we also look for ways to make them more meaningful in the present
because our Lutheran heritage calls us to be ALL-ways reforming. We
gather to be fed and nourished in community, through Word and Sacrament,
in order to be sent out so that through us God can bless the whole world -
no exceptions!
